Como saben, hemos estado transformando nuestra oficina en los últimos meses… lentos pero seguros. Uno de los elementos clave en este espacio es sin duda nuestra pared negra, que desde un principio planeé para que el punto focal. Recibe mucha luz natural, es justo la pared que ves si te asomas desde afuera y ahí recargamos uno de los escritorios, así que era ideal.
As you know, slowly but surely, we’ve been working on our home office makeover for the last few months. One of the key elements here is our black wall, which I especially envisioned to be the focal point. It receives lots of natural light, you can see it from the hallway outside, and it’s where we place one of our computers, making it perfect for the job.
Y como aquí me gusta contarles todo: lo bueno, lo malo y lo feo… el día de hoy les voy a contar la aventura que tuvimos que pasar para que pudiéramos tener este muro que hoy luce tan bonito. Sí, no todo es miel y dulzura por aquí. :)
Resulta que cuando pienso en una pared negra, siempre la quiero de pizarrón (o pizarra). Ya he escrito antes sobre ellas, y es que me encantan con su aspecto completamente mate. Entonces pienso, si ya me voy a animar a pintarla de negro, de una vez la pinto de pizarrón, y así, si se me antoja, puedo escribir o dibujar sobre ella. Si no, la dejo negra, sin rayarla, con su textura que me encanta. Yo sé que no son para todo mundo (son muy sucias), pero a mí me fascinan, así que me lancé a comprar la pintura especial para pizarrón a comex… y la aventura empezó.
And since I love telling you all: the good, the bad, and the ugly, today I’m telling you the adventure we had to undergo so we could have this lovely wall in our office.
Turns out, when I think of a black wall, I want it chalkboard. I’ve written about them before, I just love them all so very much. I like how matte they are and how great they look, so I think to myself: “If I’m already painting it black, I might as well go all the way and use chalkboard paint. That way, I can write or draw on it… or I can leave it blank, with it’s lovely matte surface. I know they are not meant for everyone, and they are kinda dirty, but I love them, so I went to get me some paint… and the adventure begun.
De verdad que yo no pensé que fuera a tener problemas, y no era la primera vez que pintaba con este tipo de pintura, pero aquí pueden ver lo que me pasó. Resulta que la pintura que compré en Comex me dejaba la marca de los traslapes de los brochazos. O sea, que en cada lugar en donde la pintura se iba secando de manera natural (por ejemplo, toda la parte de arriba), y se traslapaba con la siguiente pasada de pintura (o sea, toda la parte de abajo), se notaba (como pueden ver en esa línea de enmedio).
Fue horrible. Quiere decir que tenía que pintar en un solo brochazo toda la pared, lo cual era absurdo considerando el tamaño de la misma. De hecho, esta foto fue mi segundo intento con brocha, ya que el primero fue totalmente irregular (como normalmente pinta uno), así que la pared se veía mucho más “manchada” que ésta (sorry, no tomé fotos).
Fui a Comex a preguntar con el vendedor, y no me supo dar explicación, aunque él mismo vio lo que sucedía con una pequeña prueba que hicimos. En las redes sociales de Comex les pregunté, pero no me ayudaron nada. Hasta que fui a otra tienda Comex y un señor con mucho conocimiento me explicó que hay pinturas que son así. Dice que esta pintura de pizarrón tiene tanto pigmento que, una vez que seca, no puedes pintar encima porque se nota la diferencia. O sea que por ejemplo, si le pegáramos sin querer a la pared, y hubiera que retocarla, no podemos porque el “retoque” se distingue del resto de la pintura.

Todo me parecía muy extraño, y más porque en la cocina yo ya había pintado con pintura de pizarrón sin ningún problema. Recordé que en la cocina había usado pintura de Prisa, y toda me quedó parejita, sin notarse los brochazos, así que fui a ese muro, y pinté algunas partes con la pintura de Comex. Si se fijan bien, pueden ver las manchas de pintura más opacas, que es donde pinté con ella.
It all seemed so weird for me, especially because I had painted with blackboard paint before in my kitchen, and I hadn’t had any issues. I remembered I used a different brand in the kitchen (Prisa), and it turned out just fine, so I went there and painted some parts with my Comex paint. You can tell where I painted, because it looks more opaque.
Entonces descubrí que las dos pinturas son muy diferentes entre sí.
And so I discovered both paints look alike but they are so very different.
Resulta que la pintura de Prisa, aunque es mate y es de pizarrón, es mucho más brillante que la de Comex, como pueden ver. Y cuando escribí con los gises, descubrí además que rayan mucho más bonito en la de Comex que en la de Prisa.
Turns out that Prisa’s paint has a gloss, and Comex is more matte. And when I used the chalks, they write better on Comex than Prisa.
Hubiera sido mucho más sencillo ir a Prisa, comprarles pintura y haber terminado con la pared. Pero a mí no me gusta lo sencillo… y no me estoy quieta hasta que me salen las cosas. Así que, con todo y que estaba molesta con Comex porque no me ayudaron en sus redes sociales (aunque se ofrecieron), y porque me parecía absurdo que no pudiera pintar con brocha, ni con rodillo, como siempre lo hago, preferí volver a comprar más pintura e intentarlo de nuevo, porque al final me gustó mucho más su superficie que la de Prisa. Quizá debí haber probado con otras marcas, pero la verdad ya lo que quería era terminar, así que esta vez, le pedí ayuda a J., me traje la compresora de la oficina, ¡y pintamos con la pistola!
It would have been so much easier going to Prisa, buying the paint with them, and getting over with that wall. But I don’t like simple, and I’m not happy until I get what I want so, eventhough I was mad at Comex for they’re lack of support and because I found it absurd for them to sell a paint you can’t apply like the rest, I decided to buy more paint from them and try it again, simply because I loved how the chalk wrote on their paint better. I guess I could have gone to other brands and keep trying, but I wanted to get it over with, so I asked J. for help, and decided to use the air compressor and the gun!
Tuvimos que empapelar el resto de las paredes y proteger todo lo que teníamos en el cuarto, pues la pistola avienta una brisa que hubiera pintado todo. Le dimos 3 manos cuidando mucho no dejar secar la pintura, porque aún con la pistola se nota la nueva pintura una vez que la anterior secó… así que J. tenía que pintar desde el techo hasta el piso en un sólo movimiento, y así todo el ancho de la pared, sin descansar. Es un amor. :)
We had to cover the other walls and protect everything we had in the room. We gave it 3 coats of paint, having extra care not to let the paint dry, because you could tell even with the paint gun. This meant J had to paint from ceiling to floor in one movement, all the way to the other side of the wall, non stop. He is such a love :)
Después lijé la pared 2 veces con lija de 600, pues la pistola deja una sensación al tacto más rugosa que la brocha, como de pequeños grumitos.
Then I followed with sandpaper, to smooth out the surface.
Y así fue como conseguimos nuestra hermosa pared negra… nada fácil, lo sé, pero valió la pena. Adoro cómo se ve, y más con el vinil geométrico que pusimos encima.
And that’s how we managed to have our beautiful black chalkboard wall. It wasn’t easy, but it was totally worth it. I love how it looks with the geometric decal.

He hablado con otra gente que ha comprado la pintura de Comex y dicen que no han tenido problema, pero ésta fue mi experiencia y siempre me gusta ser muy honesta con todo lo que hago. Apliqué la pintura bien, como dicen las instrucciones, diluyendo con thinner americano del que ellos mismos venden, en fin. He pintado muchas veces, todo el tiempo lo hago, y es la primera vez que me da tanto trabajo, así que, confiando en lo que aquel vendedor dijo, parece que la pintura así es. Tiene tanto pigmento que cuando seca, aunque sea poquito, se le nota cuando la vuelves a pintar… y eso aunque seas el pintor más experimentado, ya sea con brocha o con rodillo. Así que si tú quieres pintar con pintura de pizarrón, te recomiendo hagas pruebas en una tabla pequeña, tal vez en las mismas tiendas de pinturas, para que escojas desde antes una que te funcione bien, conforme a lo que tú buscas. ;)

I have spoken to other people, and they say they didn’t have this experience with Comex, but this is what happened to us, and I like telling you about it.
